History
The Community Coalition of Horry County (CCHC) was created in 1996 and is a broad
coalition of county residents working together to create a stronger community
through improving:
- Family and parenting resources
- Workplace benefits for families
- Children’s access to new books
- Youth development opportunities
- Communications among nonprofit organizations
CCHC evolved from the Horry County Interagency Council, an organization with a
25-year history in the county. Now in its eighth year, the Coalition has grown
from 30 members in the Interagency Council to 28 volunteer board and advisory
board members and over 160 volunteer collaborating partners representing over 125
different businesses, agencies and organizations working to create a healthier
community for everyone.
We also have assisted and nurtured two initiatives which developed into
independent organizations: A Father’s Place,
www.afathersplace.org, which works
with non-custodial fathers to improve their connections with their children; and
Latinoamericanos en Accion, which provides services for our growing
Latino/a population.
Value of the Community Coalition
- $1.8 million in funding has been brought into our county (private,
state, and federal).
- $1.4 million in taxpayer dollars saved, 2000-2002, due to a 12.9% decrease
in teen pregnancy (estimated $21,900/pregnancy cost). The entire community can be
proud, and have benefited from these efforts, which also result in fewer children living
in poverty.
- Employee-certified Family Friendly Businesses report improved employee
recruitment; data is being collected on retention, absenteeism, and employee morale.
- Emerging community needs can be addressed quickly.
- Everyone in the community is invited and welcome to participate in making Horry
County the best place to live, work and grow.
